WOMEN OF HAKI

Meet the incredible women we work with, in the heart of southern Kenya
These warm, hardworking ladies juggle supporting their families with tending their own land and weaving cotton. And guess what? Despite battling unpredictable rains that often ruin their crops, they stick together and find joy in their weaving. They're proud and skilled. They set their own schedules and even take the spinning wheels home for that extra bit of flexibility.
It's not easy to provide for yourself and your family when life is uncertain, but these women are doing it with amazing strength and grace.

OUR STORY

The story of Haki begins with the dreams of founders Claartje de Rooij and Marie-Claire Breuning. Back in 2009 these two Dutch dynamos fell head over heels for Kenya's energy, beauty of the land and its people. They made a heartfelt decision to ignite a spark for positive change alongside the community.
Teaming up with local partners, Claartje and Marie-Claire embarked on a journey in 2009, laying the groundwork for projects aimed at fostering self-reliance. Their NGO, 'Lala Salama' (www.lalasalama.org) - meaning 'sleep safely' in Swahili - forged close ties with schools to implement food and agriculture initiatives. This marked the genesis of a decade-long journey, deeply intertwined with Kenyan communities.
After a decade of immersing themselves in the knowledge, craftsmanship, and potential of Kenyan women, a new aspiration blossomed: an additional project dedicated specifically to women's empowerment. Fueled by admiration for their skills and talents, Haki was born – every stitch and fiber infused with the power of Kenyan women. Haki brings the rich traditions and beauty of Kenyan fabrics and ancient textile craftsmanship straight to your doorstep.
